Chromophobia
2015
"Colour is the fragmentation of unity." Julia Kristeva
In the colour manifesto Chromophobia David Batchelor writes about the role of colour, the dualism between colour and line and the submission of colour under the line - colore vs. disegno. For many art theorists, philosophers and architects, from Aristoteles to Charles Blanc and LeCorbusier, colour is the feminine, the sensual, the irrational, which leads to ecstasy, fall and awareness loss. Therefor it has to be controlled by the line, the masculine and the rational. In his manifesto David Batchlor shows the effect and power of colour and it`s changing role in art through time. He leads the reader to a chromophilia.
The inspiration was translated into a suits collection. Colour disrupts and suborders the line, which is the pattern construction in fashion. The fine pattern cutting of the suits becomes background for the colours.
Five bright coloured jersey fabrics were sponsored: blue, green, yellow, orange and pink. To extend the colour range some of the fabrics were discoloured through a special process, which resulted in three more colours – olive, mint green and a bluish grey.
